Care & Longevity
A handmade piece deserves a long life. These guides will help your jewellery stay as luminous the day you receive it as the day you first looked at it — years from now.
Universal Guidelines
Four rules for every piece
Last on, first off
Put your jewellery on after applying perfume, hairspray, or lotion. Remove it before washing your hands or showering. Chemicals in everyday products are the leading cause of tarnish.
Store in the dark
Light accelerates oxidation. Store pieces individually in a cloth pouch or a closed jewellery box — never in a pile where they can scratch each other.
Keep dry
Remove before swimming, bathing, and exercising. Chlorine (pools), salt water, and sweat are particularly damaging to both silver and gold vermeil settings.
Handle with clean, dry hands
Natural skin oils transfer to stones and settings. A gentle wipe with a lint-free cloth after each wear goes a very long way.
Stone-Specific Care
Every stone is different
Hardness, porosity, and sensitivity to light or chemicals vary significantly between stones. Follow these guides to keep each one at its best.
Silver Settings
Do
Polish gently with a silver polishing cloth
Use a soft toothbrush + warm water + a drop of dish soap for intricate details
Store with an anti-tarnish strip in the pouch
Don't
Never use toothpaste — it's abrasive and will scratch
Avoid ultrasonic cleaners if the stone is soft (under 7 Mohs)
Don't let it air-dry — pat dry immediately after cleaning
Gold Vermeil
Do
Wipe with a soft, damp cloth after wearing
Buff gently with a gold polishing cloth
Store separately from silver pieces
Don't
Never use abrasive cleaners — the vermeil layer is only 2.5 microns thick
Don't wear in pools or the sea — chlorine strips the gold layer
Avoid rubbing with rough fabrics
Hard Stones (Quartz, Amethyst, Labradorite — 7+ Mohs)
Do
Rinse under lukewarm water and pat dry
A very soft brush can clean crevices
Safe for occasional mild soap
Don't
Don't leave soaking in water for prolonged periods
Avoid sudden temperature changes (hot then cold)
Keep away from harsh chemicals
Soft Stones (Turquoise, Malachite, Opal — under 6 Mohs)
Do
Wipe only with a dry or very slightly damp soft cloth
Store with extra care — they scratch easily
Apply a drop of mineral oil occasionally to maintain lustre (Turquoise)
Don't
Never use water, soap, or chemicals — these stones are porous and will absorb them
Don't use ultrasonic cleaners — they can crack soft stones
Never spray perfume near these stones
Rose Quartz & Moonstone
Do
Clean with a barely damp cloth
Charge in moonlight to preserve their energy (optional, but lovely)
Handle gently — Moonstone is brittle
Don't
Don't leave in direct sunlight for extended periods — Rose Quartz can fade
Avoid knocking against hard surfaces
Keep away from ultrasonic cleaners
